The Green Up initiative
Founded in 2019 by
Madam Lalithama Nair
Green Up Singapore is more than a sustainability project. It is a heartfelt mission to reconnect people to their roots and restore our relationship with the natural world.
Awarded the prestigious Pingat Bakti Masyarakat (PBM) for her outstanding contributions to society, a recognition that reflects her lifelong commitment to giving back and improving lives, Madam Lalithama has long understood that the distance we have created between ourselves and nature has profound, damaging consequences.
This disconnect has harmed not only our environment but also our physical and mental health. Today, research consistently shows what our ancestors knew intuitively: our well-being is inseparable from the well-being of our surroundings.
A walk in nature should not be a rare luxury reserved for a holiday in Bali. It should be part of our daily lives. Breathing fresh, oxygen-rich air, eating food free of harmful pesticides, and feeling the earth beneath our feet are not indulgences but essential needs. Lalithama’s mission is to remind us of this truth and make it accessible to everyone.
Her own connection to the natural world was forged in her maternal grandmother’s backyard. There, she watched her grandmother nurture herbs and share their healing properties. She remembers building mud huts for ants, learning to read the wind, and delighting in the scent of rain-soaked earth. These formative experiences shaped her belief that nature is not just a place we visit but a living part of who we are.
Through Green Up, Madam Lalithama is bringing this vision directly to the community. Her innovative mobile services meet people where they are, at home, in schools, institutions, or organizations, to create tailored, hands-on experiences that educate, inspire, and empower.
What began as her personal mission has now transcended countries, ages, generations, cultures, and backgrounds. Green Up has grown into a diverse family of like-minded individuals and communities, all pledging to do their part. While Lalithama may have planted the seed, this is not a solo journey. It is a shared commitment that has gathered remarkable support from people who believe in building a sustainable, compassionate, and healthier world for everyone.
She is determined to turn awareness into meaningful action, helping people rediscover the profound
value of living in harmony with the earth and nurturing a sustainable future for all.
